ANZAC day ...Hamburg to Luneburg via The Fishmarket...!

ANZAC Day ....we do need to remember our soldiers......and also Dazza's birthday...so we call Australia and chat to Gary's brother who was celebrating with his family in Port douglas for the weekend.
As we left our street we discovered that the main street was closed due to the Hamburg marathon....and when we arrived closer to the waterway....our timing was impeccable as the leaders...who all appeared to be Kenyans....passed beneath the bridge we were crossing....I was impressed!

The St Pauli suburb...of which Reeperbahn is a small area....boasts a thriving market every Sunday morning from 6am - 11am...When we arrived it was alive with vibrant colors, music, sprukers competitively selling their wares, people bargaining to get the best prices...and many people, like ourselves loving the atmosphere and energy enveloping the precinct....During winter the stalls are held inside an enormous Hall but when the weather improves...as it had...the caravans and sellers position themselves outside along the watesredge...consequently the Hall takes on a very different scene during Spring and Summer! We entered this Hall about 9am expecting to wander between more stalls of produce only to be treated to a live band belting out Rock and Roll....revellers dined in the upstairs section and in the lower section people lined the tressels....singing, laughing, drinking and dancing in the aisles and near the stage.....We were stunned at the scene as it was something you might expect maybe, late afternoon or evening but here we were, in the early hours of Sunday morning, stunned and amused......We decided that... when in Hamburg, do what the Hamburgers do....so we joined Travis and Twilla and their friends and treated ourselves to a champagne!!!!...and toasted our ANZACs as well...! So much for the nourishing breakky I was ready for....! It was lots of fun but when we left an hour or so later, I needed some food.... but the only sustenance I could find was a large coffee....Gary took a picture of me just moments before I spilled half its contents down my front....No....I had only had ONE champagne but didn't realise that the lid wasn't secured....So much for wearing white pants...and it was only the start of what turned into another wonderful adventure!

Travis had driven from Holland for the weekend in a hire car so we took a drive out in the country to a little town steeped in history, Luneburg. We were challenged getting
there due to road closures for the Marathon and roadworks on the main drag out of Hamburg....We thought it was going to take all day to do the 50 minute trip....we had heaps to chat about so the journey wasn't wasted. Central Luneburg provided us with a
large boulevade designated to wining and dining either El Fresco or indoors...The many, many little cafes and restaurants which lined the streets were varied and intriguing as each one seemed to have a unique purpose for existing...not just for its hospitality. Our choice was a brewery, Malzer, with a long history,...The dining area was about 50metres from the actual brewery and set outside and in front of a grand building...sunshine, friends, beautiful wine and food....superb!

Our walking tour took us down quaint little alleys and finally to the original watertower which we climbed to get a bird's eye view of Luneburg.

Returning to Hamburg, we chose to walk the waterside wall from Baumwall back around to St Pauli with 100's of other pedestrians lapping up the warmth and taking the opportunity to bask in Hamburg's waterside beauty. An evening cocktail at the Hamburg Del Mar....'a beach bar by the sea' where people were spending a PSA in beach mode......then back to home base via the little back streets full of ecclectic character..... to reflect on the unpredicted adventure we had enjoyed!

Saturday 24th April....Warsteiner Elbspeicher....with Trav & Twilla

The day began cold but blossomed into a beautiful Spring day during which I managed to get a bit sunburnt!
Before we headed out for the day I searched the net to get return flights to London...I wasn't very confident in securing them with the backlog of travellers still trying to get into the UK.....However, success was mine and I have flights booked arriving in Gatwick 10.20am, 27th April....and 2 nights in a hotel near Hyde Park area. I intend exploring London in the 2 days before Gemma and the girls arrive on 29th April.......I am getting really excited at seeing them and spending 'Girl' time with them. They are gorgeous girls and lots of fun..... I had a message from Gem yesterday, telling me that she was on crutches....A man tried to steal their bag of jackets and shoes when they were dancing on seats in a very crowded bar....Gemma saw him and jumped down and chased him.....consequently spraining her ankle!!!!!!......Poor darling.....I hope it heals quickly....she's pretty tough so I suspect she wont let it slow her down too much....GOOD news was that she intercepted him and got their gear back...You Hero Gem!!!.......I have a few days to explore even further after they leave London 2nd May....I fly out from Gatwick, back to Hamburg 4th May @ 5.30pm....which will hopefully give me enough time to get back here to the apartment and head off to the Ice Hockey match between Canada and Germany!
We took the walk which Gary does everyday towards the waterway, crossed the bridge to discover everyone else out and about enjoying the warmth and ambience of the waterside precinct. This is the area where the Fishmarket occurs on a Sunday. Along from there we joined Travis and Twilla, our friends whose wedding we enjoyed at Byron Bay 18months ago and whom I haven't seen since then. Seated out of the wind overlooking the water way, we were treated to impeccable friendly service and wined and dined our way through hours of non stop chat............a gourmet delight!!
We walked the precinct and took in the colors, the live music, the multitude of people soaking up the sights and sounds..........a train trip to another trendy area full of cafes and winebars ....Having shared a happy hour cocktail we parted with the anticipation of doing breakfast @ The Fishmarket on Sunday!
Saturday night in 'The Mile of Sin': ...............People and more people......groups of them being taken on the 'Tours of Sin & Sex'.....many of them, and all of the tour guides, were dressed up in an array of characters...!! We were totally entertained by a group of Doctors well and truly entrenched in the crazy-ness....(is that a word?...) of a Bucks night...dressed in relevant attire and sharing their fun with all of us who were just as crazy....or silly enough to participate....
...What more can I say other than...I was certainly entertained and happy that the Polize Station was right in the middle of it all!
Having dined on an American version of burritos....my day was spent.....but GT, in true style....kicked on into the wee hours of the morning to the live music at Molly Malones......
I will fill you in on my foot tour a little later as I am heading off to the Fish market now....remember the guide book told me that the walking tour should take 4 hours??............well I have only completed half of it and it took me a solid 6 hours to get that far!!!! I must admit that I saw far more than the tour suggested...."Yes, I managed to go the scenic route a lot"....I got lost directionally at times but was totally lost in the amazing history unfolding before me!.....

Reeperbahn

Reeperbahn = The suburb where Gary's apartment is and consequently, where I am staying. I took this pic at the railway station so that I would know where to return to on the slim chance that I would get lost at some stage!
I have discovered that it has amazing culture but not the sort I expected! Those of you who are my vintage or older, will remember St Kilda in Melbourne as it used to be 30+ years ago.....A reknowned Red Light area where night turned into day whilst women worked the streets choosing their partners. Fitzroy Street, St Kilda's main street, was alive with 100's of people on a mission...with blinding neon lights drawing eveybody into their dens of  luxury and  fun times.....Today St Kilda still retains that culture however, today, as you move further away from Fitzroy St you will find it has become a very trendy area with gorgeous little wine bars and many cafes.....thriving with life and very sought after from people in all walks of life.......
Reeperbahn resembles the St Kilda of old!..........This areas is known as 'The Mile of Sin'. There are bars and taverns of all shapes and sizes, sex-cinemas and peep shows, and I guess....everything a Red Light district offers..............(not that I'm that familiar with them but I did spend my Uni days living in East St Kilda!)
..................Mum, PLEASE DON'T stress.............................
I am very safe and, as I am aware of the culture which, like St Kilda, is only blatantly eveident after dark, I am intrigued by it....not threatened at all....! Although I must admit, Gary was very grateful to have me by his side as we made our way home last night....Just at the end of our street the girls were working! They looked as though they had just been to the footy, not dolled up as I imagined they would be....but there was atleast a dozen of them positioned from one side to the other of the entrance of our street.....If Gary hadn't held my hand he would have been propositioned by several of them before he could get through!!!!
Now that the weather is improving the streets have become alive with activity! Thurday, having slept the afternoon away, I wokeabout 5pm to VERY LOUD singing and chanting....I thought I was at the footy...The soccer match between Germany and England was to be played not far from here and the fans were well and truly charged with alcohol and adrenaline...ready for the match!! As a result of this we witnessed van after van of Riot Police arriving and positioning themselves with their shields and batons in readiness for the fans departure to the game as well as for their return.....It resulted in a non-violent night but the fans were still revelling and very noisy when Gary went to work Friday morning!
Drinking alcohol anywhere, anytime is the norm! All takeaway shops....of which there are many around here.....sell beer and spirits very cheaply...so consequently people wander the streets around here drinking......
This IS definitely a culture shock for me but it is really only evident in REEPERBAHN!
Good live music is accessible eveywhere....Molly Malone's, 2 doors down from here has artists every night A dance hall...a smaller version of St Kilda's Palais....Grosse Farenheit 36.... is in a little side street around the corner....apparently it's where the Beatles started their world career! This is where we spent last night squashed in, standing only, grooving to the beat of the recently reunited ULTRAVOX....It was pretty challenging being 5'41/2"when the average height of everyone around me was 6'6".......but sight wasn't essential as the sound was fantastic!

Friday 23rd April.....Ready to explore Hamburg....

Hi, I am finally feeling normal again and am heading off on foot to explore ..........I have a guide book which is designed to take us on a walking tour to discover the old & new delights in Hamburg central area..... it says it should take me 4 hours to complete but these estimations are usually inflated....We will see! (go to 8 May for the written account of my walking tour!)

I have finally finished my story on the day I went on safari...you need to go back to that blog (Monday 19th April) and read the update.... and I have learned how to include pics....still a bit to learn though....I hope you like them...I have also learned that if you click on a picture it will make it full screen view...(Mum to get back to the blog just use the 'back' buttonon your screen...if you don't know which one it is just ask Chris!!)
Cheers, I'm off on another adventure!

Wednesday.......(I think!)...My first day in Hamburg....(23/4..I have just realised that it was actually Thursday!!!)

....Hi ...just a very quick note to say that today has been a bit of a write off !
Yesterday ended with lots of fun and I was so excited but....

....Exhaustion, together with a long walk to orientate me to the metro, streets and main precincts....followed by wine and cheese in a beautiful setting...then on to a little bar a few doors up from the apartment Gary is in.....and where I'm staying.....to listen to live music and immerse ourselves in the midweek night life......
......doesn't make for a very fit or healthy Fran!!!.....My lethargy is a little bit self inflicted but I seriously needed some catch up time and slept most of the afternoon!

I did, however, wake up this morning to a message from Ginger in Cairns asking me to share my journey since the last interview with ABC North radio just the other day!! Apparently they are very interested in my blog and what the next chapters will contain!!....So with about 30 minutes notice, I spoke again to the Far North and this time I actually remember most of what I shared!.....I didn't call Ginger, 'Hollie', this time as I have been told I did in the last crazy, dashing interview!
I really want to say a sincere  "THANK YOU" to my family and friends who have sent me emails, texts and good wishes of support. It was certainly a time when your encouragement and friendly voices were needed and definitely appreciated..... Please keep the communication happening.

We are off to share some Thai for dinner somewhere local....
Cheers til next time

Wednesday 21st April................I AM IN HAMBURG...NOT IN DUBAI!!! :-)))

We woke at 5am anxious to know what was happening....Hollie headed down to get her first vanilla coffee and check out the notice board to arrive back saying that UK airspace was open...She packed quickly and said farewell...again! I booted up Kelly and checked EK059 to Hamburg....It said: flying out at 9.00am! Move Fran....shower, pack, get on the bus....but .....hang on......a message from Hollie at the airport saying she had been informed that flights are being cancelled. I dragged all my bags off the shuttle bus and returned inside to discuss with Paul whether this information was accurate....He was very worried as the Premier Hotel have just booked out over 600 people in anticipation of travellers getting flights!!! He had no updated information on German airspace so I booked back into the hotel to secure my room for the night...not on Emirates but from my pocket......and returned to room #316....again.....to boot up Kelly and get the online information from Emirates ....my flight is still, supposedly, happening. After what happened to me yesterday, I was very anxious about trusting any information and very hesitant to rush off to the airport! I went downstairs, consulted Paul as to what I should do and he said to go to the airport and if I got a flight just to ring back and cancel my room and he would reimburse me......so off I went....AGAIN...I caught a taxi but as he drove out the free shuttle bus arrived so I got out...paid the flag fall and headed off ....a lovely English gentleman was onboard and settled my anxiety....he was so laid back and confident we would get our flights, that I actually relaxed and decided that, if we didn't fly, atleast I had a room for the night!!!!!!!
As I approached the doors of the airport I could feel the negative energy rushing out through the doors........I didn't want to go through them! However, I marched on regardless.....and found myself in a relatively short line and treated very kindly. I was not on their passenger list for EK059 but my booking man said to wait for 15mins and he would let me know what was happening......I didn't even wait 2 mins...he had me booked on, bag checked and boarding pass in my hand...........STEP #1 had been achieved! Onward bound.....through the numerous customs checks then suddenly I was with the others...some were capturing the moment on camera and everyone was tentatively proceeding into the waiting area. We boarded quickly and sat for an eternity until the pilot moved the plane and we taxied down the runway and left Dubai soil......STEP #2 achieved.....Oh my..Oh my.....I really was on my way to Hamburg. My UK friends were still in queues with 100's and 100's of others trying to get out....I so hope they get a flights!
I think I was in shock....I was a mess really..... my emotions flew sky high with elation that I was on my way then they plummeted with tears of sheer exhaustion! These feelings reigned for about an hour when I realised that the plane was only about 40% full and there were plenty of spare seats. I found 4 seats to lay myself across and slept for 2 hours. I woke feeling so much better and ready to enjoy the excitement of anticipating the next part of my journey. I loved the free movies, the never ending food and the friendly service from Emirates...and finally arriving in Hamburg, dressed in shorts and t-shirt, to discover it was 6C and snowing!!! mmmm luckily I had left the jeans and fleecy in my cabin bag! When flight EK059 touched down, the whole plane erupted with cheering and clapping... of relief and joy at finally being on Hamburg soil!!
It was quick and easy to get through customs....almost like a domestic flight in Australia. After all the rigamarole in every gateway in Dubai, I was pretty confused when I walked through the doors where Gary was waiting.... as none of the checks had happened......Then suddenly ........I REALISED THAT.............................. I HAD ARRIVED IN HAMBURG!!!!
